Dancers all around the world are constantly searching for new opportunities to hone their craft. Whether it's dropping in to that twice a week ballet class, or spending your summer training with your favorite dance company, the options can sometimes be overwhelming!
Here are our favorite reasons to attend a summer dance intensive:
1. It's INTENSE!
We love pushing our physicality to its limit, and a summer intensive gives you that opportunity. Classes typically run all day long, with added workshops and seminars throughout the schedule. A summer intensive is a great way to see what your body is capable of doing, and learning how to conserve energy during those long rehearsal and show days during the season.
2. Professional Networking!
A lot of summer intensives are taught by professional dancers, choreographers, and company directors. This is an awesome way to begin developing relationships with pros in the industry. We've all heard the saying "It's not what you know, it's who you know..."! Not only do you get the chance to interact with the faculty members, but you also have the opportunity to network with your peers. You never know who you will be dancing next to, or working for, in the future!
3. You'll leave feeling INSPIRED!
Something magical happens when you surround yourself with other passionate artists for days or weeks on end and exhaust yourself doing what you love. Being able to take different classes and receive information from a wide range of viewpoints gives us a fresh perspective on our dancing. Many summer intensives also include performances that can recharge your creative batteries as you head into a new dance season.
4. It's FUN!
Yes, summer intensives are a lot of hard work, but at the end of the day you are taking the time to focus on something that you love, and that makes it a lot of fun, too! Relaxing during breaks between classes with your favorite dance partner, or making new friends during lunch are some of our favorite moments at every summer intensive.
Every dancer is different and there is a perfect summer intensive experience for everyone. Take some time during the winter months to research different programs to find a few that best fit your interests as a dancer. Love contemporary and jazz dance? There's an intensive for that! Love ballet? There's an intensive for that! Love hip hop, tap, ballroom, modern? There are intensives for those, too!
At Brighton Dance Festival, we focus our classes on contemporary and jazz dance, with other specialty classes in ballet, hip hop, improvisation, commercial jazz, African, choreography studies, and more. Our training programs are geared toward experienced dancers, but our non-competitive environment allows for everyone to feel comfortable to explore new movement styles freely. The BDF faculty is comprised of professional dancers, choreographers and company directors from all around the U.S. and Canada who invest a genuine interest in each student. Training programs are available for ages 10 through adult. The week includes five days of intensive classes and repertory rehearsals, and wraps up with a Student Showcase on stage at the Brighton Center for the Performing Arts.
