We are thrilled to announce that Dontez "Just" Jones will be performing in the 7th Annual Brighton Dance Festival's Opening Night Concert on Sunday August 7th, 5pm, at the Brighton Center for the Performing Arts! "Just" will be giving our audience a glimpse into the street dance world of Popping & Animation.
In the beginning of his dance career, “Just”, trained himself (with the help of others) in the art of breaking. As time passed, he learned of the street dances; Popping, Locking, and Hip Hop Freestyle; and began to train in those styles as well. As his skills grew, he began to battle at local events and competitions, and eventually traveled around the Midwest as a judge for several dance competitions and battles. “Just” is also a part of an extremely talented crew named “Ill Minded Stylez”, and teaches at Arts in Motion in Ann Arbor, MI & Studio 3 PAC in Dexter, MI. As he continues to be a student in this culture of dance, he always strives to be the best he can be while showing everyone his gift of dance that God has blessed him with.
More about the Popping & Animation style: The dance form Popping originated in California in the late 60s to 70s. Popping is based on the technique of quickly contracting and relaxing muscles to cause a jerk in the dancer's body, referred to as the "Pop" or "Hit". Closely related illusionary dance styles and techniques are often integrated into popping to create a more varied performance; waving, robotics, animation, just to name a few.
You can also catch Dontez "Just" Jones teaching a FREE Popping & Animation class on Sunday August 7th, at 1:15-2:15pm, at MADPAC in Brighton. Free admission, open to any and all dancers ages 12+ (no need to be registered at the festival to attend.)
